In the past, Ishikawa Prefecture was ruled for a period of 400 years by some of the most talented feudal lords. These feudal lords summoned craftsmen from all across Japan in an effort to promote cultural development. As a result, with the gathered talents of craftsmen from all over Japan, traditional crafts like lacquerware, porcelain and gold leaf and their respective production techniques blossomed in Ishikawa Prefecture and were inherited down the generations. Now, Ishikawa Prefecture is commonly referred to as ‘The Kingdom of Craftsmanship’ and has become home to many of Japan’s representative traditional craft art forms.
