About the Speaker

J.Y. Pillay was recently awarded Singapore's highest civilian honour – the Order of Temasek (With Distinction). He is the 11th Singaporean to receive this special award.

 

Mr Pillay has served as permanent secretary in the finance, defence and national development ministries. Other positions he has held include chairman of Singapore Exchange and of DBS Bank, as well as managing director of GIC and the Monetary Authority of Singapore. One of his most significant contributions was building Singapore Airlines into a world-class carrier. He served as Chairman of Singapore Airlines from 1972 until 1996. He chaired the Council of Presidential Advisers from 2005 until January this year. He continues to be a member of the Presidential Council for Minority Rights and of the Financial Intelligence Authority of the Vatican.

Viswa Sadasivan is regarded as one of Singapore’s influential thinkers – an opinion leader and advocate of its evolving socio-political space.

 

With over 30 years of media experience – as practitioner and policy maker – Viswa is best known to Singapore society as the anchor of then-Singapore Broadcasting Corporation’s breakthrough news and current affairs programmes. As Senior Controller, he planned and directed coverage of the nation’s Parliamentary reports and General Elections. Viswa has interviewed Asia’s top business and political leaders, including Singapore’s first Prime Minister – the late Lee Kuan Yew, and Malaysia’s longest serving premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. He also interviewed former US President – Barack Obama.

 

A former Nominated Member of Parliament (Singapore) between 2009 and 2011, Viswa has a strong appreciation for public policy and ground sentiment.
